Working as ECI(English & Citizenship Instruction) instructor at BACI.

What I was doing was providing ESL instruction or education for legal permanent residents (LPRs) to help them prepare for citizenship and responsibilities include lesson planning, assessing student needs, and assisting students to adjust to life in a new country. I had more than 20 students in my class and they were all above 30 years old and some were 80 years old. They arrived here as refugees and wanted to become US citizens, but they had no idea what they were supposed to do. We taught them about US history and did practice interviews with them before their actual interviews. With students over the age of 70, I had to be very patient and teach them slowly so that they could understand. It was quite difficult and stressful, but I enjoyed what I was doing because I knew they were learning something new every day from my teaching, and I loved seeing and feeling incredibly delighted when more than 5 students passed their interview every month. What I learned from this experience and what this experience taught me is that sometimes it's OK to find things difficult and not easy. We all have a tendency to give up when we find them difficult, but that’s normal. What matters is that we learn to deal with difficult situations and find a way around them without giving up or stopping because we need to know that there is always one person, if not more, who has hope because of you.
